The Spanish Civil War was a domestic conflict that was internationalized even before the military rebellion of July 1936 and the nature of international intervention was a determining factor in its outcome. Aspects such as the policies of the Great Powers and the volunteers of the International Brigades have received considerable attention, but the truly global impact of the Spanish Civil War has not.
This gallery explores that global impact. A series of guest curators has created galleries devoted to individual countries on every continent, from the Great Powers to colonies, from Argentina to Australia, from China to Cuba, from Ireland to India, from the Soviet Union to South Africa and beyond. Addressing the same set of issues: government policies, volunteers who went to Spain to fight or in other capacities, the responses of civil society, and the ways the Spanish Civil War has been remembered, they capture both the diverse responses and the shared themes.
