This video, in which Clara Holguera Vera, a descendant of victims of the Badajoz massacre, reads an extract from the letter her great-grandfather wrote before he was shot, is part of Memorízate (Share Your Memories). This is a large-scale project of the Baltasar Garzón International Foundation whose goals are to promote knowledge of Spain’s democratic memory and construct the collective memory of the Spanish Civil War and the Francoist dictatorship.
Based on the premise that dialogue can be a collective process, Memorízate seeks to prevent the loss of the knowledge or the lived experience of the victims and survivors of the violations of human rights that were committed at those times in order to generate a social conscience that will prevent Spain from experiencing similar, dark events from its history.
The Project is based three different pillars built at different times and with a three-fold objective.
- Collect individual stories and information about victims, witnesses, survivors, etc., to create a digital archive that brings together testimonies, photographs, documents and interviews that constitute the traces of a collective memory to be preserved.
- Disseminate Information about the Civil War and Francoism as well as interviews with victims, activists, academics and others on social networks: Instagram, X, and YouTube in order to build awareness of democratic memory and stimulate citizen engagement.
- Promote engagement of youth through the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and experiences between victims, academics, activists and other people engaged in the movement for the recovery of memory and a group of young people by undertaking projects that deal with such topics as forced disappearance, exile and deportation, the repression of women, slave labour, the removal of Francoist symbols, education, and peace.
