The Hearst Corporation produced theatrical newsreels from 1914 through 1967. During the Spanish Civil War Hearst sent cameramen to Spain to cover the historic conflict that occurred from 1936 through 1939. The Hearst newsreels of the Spanish Civil War, along with coverage of other worldwide events, were distributed weekly to the American public in movie theaters. This still of General Emilio Mola comes from the newsreel taken on 26 May 1937, a week before Mola’s death.
In 1981 the Hearst Corporation donated the Hearst Metrotone Newsreel Collection, consisting of 27 million feet of motion picture film, to the University of California. In 2016 the Packard Humanities Institute established a collaborative project with the UCLA Film & Television Archive to digitally preserve the collection and make it publicly available.
Users of the Hearst Collection newsreels are requested to include the following credit statement: "Newsreels courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive in collaboration with The Packard Humanities Institute."
